Some people, myself included, think the Galant VR4 is a brilliant little car destined to be a collectible. One is not enough. You have to have at least two of them just in case. Others are not as enamored, but one thing that applies to all of us is the value of the cars.
Looking to buy a Galant VR4? Odds are you think all the good ones are way too expensive.
Looking to sell a Galant VR4? Bet you’re getting low-balled left and right.
Looking to get your Galant VR4 fixed after an accident and the insurance company says it’s worth less than a grand? You know that’s not right.
What is the GVR4 Value Project?
If you buy or sell a GVR4, send an email to GVR4values (at) DR1665.com (my other site). Provide the following details about the car…
- Date purchased/sold
- Year: 91 or 92
- Badge number
- Last 6 digits of the VIN (keeps it honest)
- Color
- Miles (ballpark it if you want, so long as it’s close)
- Condition: roller, poor, fair, good, excellent
- Mod Level: stock, light, moderate, extreme, race
- Region: SW, NE, MW, et al.
- Price
- Any other comments you think are important
Why share this information?
First of all, the specific details of your transaction will remain private. I will never tell anyone that you sold this car for X dollars. This project is not intended to show everyone in the world how much individuals paid for individual cars. It’s designed to track actual sales data so that, when someone tries to low-ball a clean Galant, the seller can tell them to piss off, because he will know what cars like his are selling for – by condition, by region, by miles, etc.. If you’re in an accident and the other guy’s insurance says your car is totaled and they’re willing to give you $800 for it, you can contact tap this project and provide consistent data showing that your car is likely worth much, much more than that.
What will be done with this information?
At least four times a year, I will publish a report on the data at that point. Depending on participation, there might be a lot of details provided, but expect to see how many GVR4s have been sold in the previous quarter, rolling 12 months, and year-to-date, along with average prices for which they sold. Data may be provided via Excel spreadsheet (with specific car/badge/VIN details omitted) for those who wish to delve deeper into the data, for example comparing prices by condition or color in a specific region.
Should someone be considering the purchase of a specific car, they can contact this project to see how many times that car has been sold, when, and if there is any kind of trend in the pricing. Again, this project will not divulge who previous sold the car, or what they got for it, but rather that the car was sold so many times, the most recent price of X being part of an upward/downward trend.
In situations where a GVR4 has been involved in an accident, the insurance company is likely to use mainstream valuation tools which are not the best at determining the actual value of such rare cars. How would you feel if you paid $5000 for a car and, six months later, after some moron pulls out in front of you, the insurance company treats your car like some random, 17 year old Mitsubishi sedan and offers you $800 salvage value? Contact this project and get up to the minute data reflecting what these cars actually sell for and have the amount of data to back it up.
Your data will only be used to maintain a database of the ACTUAL selling prices of Galant VR4s. Are rolling shells worth $1500? Are the best and brightest of the community really getting more than $10,000 for their cars? Together we will find out.
References available upon request.
If you sell a GVR4 and would like to be available as a reference for the car in the future – be that good or bad – please say so and include an email address where you could be contacted in the future. In this way, we can see to it that the well cared-for cars are listed at the premium prices and come with a solid history of previous owners willing to speak to the quality of the car. Likewise, those who would seek to unload a clusterfuck on some poor, unsuspecting stranger who just wants to own one of these rare automobiles will have to prove he’s fixed things or drop his price, further encouraging proper care and maintenance.

As one Galant VR4 owner to another… Thank you.
